Player FAQs

Our goal is simple – to make it easy and enjoyable for adults to play the world game.  

We partner with venues, hosts and organisers to offer competitive, social and walking football games on a casual basis and in a variety of locations, giving you flexibility and the freedom to choose when and where you want to play. 

Our vision is for a world where everyone can play football on their own terms, and at every stage of their life. 

Footy Mates is a family-owned and run business based in Brisbane, Queensland.

Playing football with Footy Mates is easy – simply go to the search bar to find a football game near you, then create a free Footy Mates profile to book a spot.  

You can search by date, location and level (advanced, social, walking), and view game information such as players and venue features and directions. 

Once you have booked a spot, you can connect with the game organiser or host and let your friends know about the game.  

On the day, the game organiser or host will check players in, divide them into teams and explain the rules.

Found a football game near you? To book a spot, click ‘Join the game!’. 

You will be asked to create a free Footy Mates profile or sign in to an existing profile.  

Once you have booked a spot, you can connect with the game organiser or host and let your friends know about the game.

It is free to sign up for Footy Mates. 

Our game fees are based on venue hire costs, which is why they can vary from location to location. 

Game fees include a small margin to cover Footy Mates’ overheads, but our goal is to ensure all games are affordable.

No. The idea of Footy Mates is to give individuals the chance to play and connect with their local football community.  

Once you have booked a spot, you can let your friends know about the game and encourage them to join.

No. Footy Mates offers games on a casual basis, giving players flexibility and the freedom to choose when and where they want to play.

We encourage players to bring water and a sense of fun and sportsmanship to games.

In general, game hosts/organisers will provide balls and ask players to bring two different coloured shirts to form teams.

Footy Mates has some basic rules for anyone playing a game:  

  1. Have fun 
  2. Play fair and show respect to your fellow Footy Mates 
  3. Get to know someone  

We play with no referee so ask players to call their own fouls. We also have a strict rule of no slide tackles. 

The game host/organiser will divide players into teams and let you know the game format. This information can also be found on the game page under housekeeping.

If a game needs to be cancelled, for example, due to weather or low bookings, the game host will notify you 12 hours before the game. 

In the event of a game cancellation, you will be issued with a credit.

We understand that life happens. If you can’t make a game, please ensure you remove your name from the list ASAP so someone else can book your spot.  

If you cancel 24 hours prior to a game, you will be issued with a credit. 

If you cancel less than 24 hours prior to a game, you will forfeit your game fee.

If a game is cancelled by the host/organiser (at least 12 hours prior), you will be issued with a credit.

A Footy Mates host organises the venue and sets up the game page using Footy Mates’ easy-to-use template.

Once players start booking spots, you can connect with them and notify them of any updates.

On the day, you will bring equipment (usually balls, bibs and a basic first aid kit) and arrive early to check players in and organise teams. It is up to you whether you join in the game.

Footy Mates takes a small fee to cover overheads and once your venue hire costs are covered, the rest is yours to keep.

We ask that hosts keep games affordable and base them on venue hire costs.

There are many benefits to becoming a Footy Mates host or organiser.

You’ll join a community of football enthusiasts who love the world game and bringing people together.

You also have a chance to play football for free or a small profit.

Footy Mates provides hosts and organisers with support, as well as opportunities to socialise with each other.

On the day, you will bring equipment (usually balls, bibs and a basic first aid kit) and arrive early to check players in and organise teams.

You will also ensure that players abide by the Footy Mates rules and call their own fouls.

At a bare minimum, we ask that hosts and organisers bring balls, a pump and a basic first aid kit to games.  

You can also bring bibs (or ask players to bring two different coloured shirts for splitting up into teams), a portable speaker and refreshments and snacks to share.  

We encourage hosts and organisers to create a friendly and fun atmosphere.

Footy Mates is here to support you to run games.  

We will arrange an initial phone call to discuss how it works and answer any questions you may have.  

We will also provide you with resources to support you to use the Footy Mates website and run games, as well as a Footy Mates contact for urgent enquiries.

Players must be given at least 12 hours’ notice of a game cancellation. 

To cancel a game, sign in to your Footy Mates profile, go to Games, find the game you want to cancel, and click ‘Cancel game’.  

This will generate an automatic email to players notifying them of the game cancellation.  

We encourage hosts and organisers to only cancel games if it’s absolutely necessary, e.g., due to weather or low bookings.  

If you can no longer attend a game, please contact us to let us know and we will try to find a replacement.

Game hosts will set game fees based on venue hire costs and Footy Mates’ fee will be automatically added.   

Once a game has completed, the host’s payment will be processed and paid into their nominated bank account.  

Footy Mates uses Stripe to process payments.

Venue FAQs

Yes! We’re always looking for new venues to join the Footy Mates community.  

We charge a small fee per game for use of our website, which is promoted across social media, traditional media and Footy Mates’ mailing list.  

Once registered as a Footy Mates venue, you can use the website to set up games and manage bookings. Make your venue stand out by offering players deals on food and beverage.

No one likes to see empty football pitches. By signing up as a Footy Mates venue, you’ll be tapping into a community of football enthusiasts who love to play the world game. 

Your venue will also benefit from promotion across Footy Mates’ networks and channels, introducing new patrons to your services. 

Footy Mates will provide you with technical support, as well as regular stats to help you tailor games to players in your local area.

Footy Mates is a growing community and we’re always looking to add new venues.
